International Coral Reef Symposia Proceedings

The symposium was originally organized by the International Association for Biological Oceanography but is now organized by the International Society for Coral Reefs.

 

The first symposium was held in Mandapam Camp, India in 1969, followed by the second on board the M.V. Marco Polo in Australian waters in 1974, 3^rd Miami (1977), 4^th Manila, the Philippines (1980), 5^thTahiti, French Polynesia (1985), 6^th Townsville, Queensland, Australia (1988), 7^th Guam (1992), 8^th Panama City, Panama (1996), 9^th Bali, Indonesia (2000), 10^th Okinawa, Japan (2004), 11^th Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States (2008), 12^thCairns, Queensland, Australia (2012), and 13^th Honolulu (2016). The regular schedule was disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic such that the Bremen, Germany meeting was held virtually (14^th) in 2020 but then in person (15^th) in 2022. The most recent (16^th) was held in Auckland, New Zealand (2026) and the next (17^th) is scheduled for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2030.

 

The Proceedings of the previous International Coral Reef Symposiums (1st to 12th) were digitized and used to be available in a searchable interface at ReefBase. Unfortunately, when World Fish Center decided to close down ReefBase, they did not provide the Society with a means to make them available. To our knowledge all those files were lost.

 

Thankfully, the Society now has a benefactor and an institutional partner with whom we are working to get all past symposium proceedings online with separate DOIs for each presentation. That work is currently underway. The new partner will provide a long-term home to serve these files and copies will be provided to the Society for safe keeping.
