John Ogden President's Awards

Description:  These awards are established in honor and memory of Dr John Ogden, who served as ICRS president from 1994-1998.  John was a wonderful colleague, advisor, mentor, friend, and inspiration to many coral reef scientists around the world.  His work included research in behavioural ecology and the role of herbivores in reef and seagrass communities, as well as protection and conservation of tropical ecosystems.   John passed away in 2023.  To honor his legacy of inclusivity and collaboration, these two types of awards will be dedicated to support scientists, reef managers, and policy makers from developing countries who are involved in coral reef research and conservation.  Membership Awards recipients will receive a one-year membership (renewable) in ICRS.  Meeting Attendance Award recipients will be provided with funds needed to attend the 2026 ICRS in New Zealand.

Eligibility: Any scientist, graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, resource manager, or policy maker who is from a developing or low-income country and is involved in coral reef science and conservation may apply.

ICRS membership requirements: None

ICRS service requirements: None

Please note:  You may apply to these awards without having a membership and to other awards that do require you to be a member at the same time.

Membership Awards

ICRS is pleased to announce that it is providing up to 100 John Ogden President’s Membership Award for coral reef practitioners that are citizens of low and middle income nations.  Full ICRS membership will be granted for two years, allowing awardees the opportunity to apply for member-only travel awards to attend ICRS 2026 in New Zealand, as well as have access to other member benefits. The goal of this initiative is to increase the engagement of under-represented peoples from coral-rich, but financially challenged areas, as well as those from other reduced income nations.
